2016 was a strange year and many will be happy to see the back of it. But Sample, a science correspondent for the Guardian, reminds us that intrepid researchers worldwide served up a variety of fascinating, hopeful and downright miraculous findings over the past year. From the creation of the first three-parent child to the detection of gravitational waves, science moved inexorably forward despite world unrest and uneasy politics - as it always does.
